PCB and Electronics News Guilt admitted in water-pollution case By Onell R. Soto The company, Moore Printed Circuits, agreed to pay a $75,000 fine, and the owner, Ghanshyambhai Patel, of Chicago, faces less than a year in prison at a sentencing set for May 25. The company's president, Paramanand "Perry" Sheth, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday on pollution charges as the result of an earlier plea agreement in San Diego federal court. The company pleaded guilty to illegally discharging contaminated water in 2003. Patel pleaded guilty to conspiring to run the factory knowing that it would pollute. The charges stem from broken pollution-control equipment at the factory that the owners decided was too expensive to fix. Authorities said in court documents that workers at the plant tampered with monitoring equipment and manipulated the flow of wastewater when inspectors visited. A third man, Gandaji Chavda, of Chicago, who owns one-fourth of the company, reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. However, the judge rejected the agreement and scheduled a trial for May 31. The company had a permit allowing its factory on Nancy Ridge Drive to discharge small amounts of copper into the city's sewage system, but exceeded that amount at least nine times between October 2001 and September 2003, prosecutors said in an indictment last September. They also said the company illegally discharged extremely acidic water into the sewers. The Point Loma wastewater treatment plant is unable to remove copper, which can affect marine life in the Pacific Ocean. That's why industrial users are required to remove pollutants at the factory, city officials said last year. --------------------------------------------------------------- Sirenza Microdevices Announces Release of High Performance Digital TV and Set-Top Box Amplifier IC BROOMFIELD, Colo., April 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sirenza Microdevices (Nasdaq: SMDI), a leading designer and supplier of high-performance radio frequency (RF) components for communications equipment manufacturers, today announced the release of the S510067, an RF silicon CMOS 3.3V RF integrated circuit (RFIC) for intermediate frequency (IF) digital TV applications. Developed to help improve the performance and reduce the number of components in HDTVs and digital set-top boxes, the new S510067 offers a solution which combines multiple functions into one RFIC. This IC is designed for use in VSB/NTSC receivers, PC TV tuners, VSB/QAM/NTSC tuner network interface modules (NIM), and integrated HDTVs and set-top boxes. The S510067 includes two highly linear input automated gain control (AGC) amplifiers and IF video amplifiers in one package while reducing costly components, circuit complexity and printed circuit board space. In addition, the S510067 operates from 20 to 100 MHz, has a gain range of 14 to 68dB and has more than 54dB of total gain control range. John Pelose, vice president and general manager of Sirenza's Amplifier Division commented, "The production release of this IF AGC amplifier demonstrates Sirenza's dedication to diversifying both product breadth and end markets." Pelose added, "This high-performance amplifier product continues our focus on providing our customers with integrated component solutions that enable them to reduce their product cost and complexity." The S510067 is offered in either industry standard QFN-28 or 20 pin TSSOP packages and is "green" or RoHS compliant. RFIC test evaluation boards with complete typical applications circuits are available upon request. For more detailed information please visit http://www.sirenza.com. Sirenza Microdevices, Inc.
