PCB and Electronics News ITT Industries, Cannons New Board/Harness Connector System Saves Cost in Demanding Applications ECU connector saves space while meeting stringent automotive specifications... NEWTON, Mass. January 3, 2005 ITT Industries, Cannons new harness to PCB connector system cuts installed cost and saves board space versus conventional pin and socket designs. The ECU connector system is a modular, landed contact system that features only a plug assembly. Power and signal contacts are encased in a custom housing. A latching system within the housing ensures secure and reliable mating to the PCB. Highly effective for automotive applications, the ECU connector is designed to mate directly to an engine management system, which can be mounted directly on an engine, meeting all the rugged, environmental requirements of USCAR and SAE J 2030. Because the system effectively eliminates the female half of the connector system, installed cost savings can be more than 30 percent, making the connector system attractive for additional harness/PCB interconnection applications, including medical and industrial uses. The footprint of Cannons ECU connector is approximately 20% smaller than traditional wire-to-board solutions. Additionally, reliability increases by eliminating the need to solder a connector half to the PCB. ECU contacts can be configured for power (up to 7A) and signal (1A), according to customer requirements. The devices are sealed to IP69K, withstand high vibration, and operate across a -55 to +125degC temperature range. B2 Spice Professional CS has been designed to directly integrate with Zuken's desktop PCB design solution, CADSTAR, providing analog, digital and mixed mode circuit simulation. Beige Bag is currently in the process of advanced development for further integration into the CADSTAR design environment. Coding for the first stage of integration has already been completed. Beige Bag is also planning to release B2 Map CS a collection of tools for the automatic mapping of simulation models for CADSTAR user libraries. B2 Spice has been in use by CADSTAR users for many years. This agreement, however, takes the relationship to a new level and represents the beginning of a formal agreement between Beige Bag Software and Zuken. The firm, which specialises in Windows-based software, said existing product names such as Protel, Nexar and CircuitStudio remain, but "these brands now represent licensing options of Altium Designer". Altium Designer integrates board and FPGA system design, embedded software development for FPGA-based processors, and PCB layout. All editing and manufacturing is within a single design environment. The Australian firm is pushing the move towards programmable logic, away from hardwired processors and peripherals. "The development of electronic products is a juggling act that balances the drive to embed more and more intelligence into a design with the time needed to create, implement and test the application," said Nick Martin, founder and CEO of Altium. "Microprocessors and digital design paradigms allowed portions of the design problem to be moved into a highly fluid and easily updateable realm - software. This enabled some complexity to be dealt with in a 'soft' environment that was flexible and easily changeable throughout the design process. "Today the availability at relatively low cost of high-capacity, high-performance programmable devices such as FPGAs is shifting the balance again and allowing previously fixed design elements, such as the processor and its peripheral components and logic blocks, to be moved into a 'soft' domain." Individual licences range in price from $1,995 for CircuitStudio to $9,999 for Nexar or Protel. A unified licence costs $11,995. www.altium.com |
