VP/ Director Operations - Engineering Services - Minneapolis
Minneapolis
Our profitable and growing Twin-Cities client seeks a key professional to provide leadership in strengthening internal controls and business systems. This strategic professional will manage and interface administrative functions in engineering services and report directly to the CEO – current projects, contract services, HR, IT, and finance. The ideal candidate is a change agent with a mentoring/coaching style, strong financial acumen, and is adept at helping professionals manage their projects.
Important initial initiatives would include:
· Integrating new project management software.
· Establishing benchmarks for measurable reviews.
· Help the engineering staff and managers capture design/change orders to allow better-associated margins. This key person will drive change in a firm yet personable manner.
The ideal candidate will have integrated systems between engineering, accounting and HR. They will understand project management, costing and time tracking for engineering projects. They themselves seek a key role in an expanding pond. Could be the number-two position.
This established firm has a strong track record with its client base and continues to grow rapidly (20%). Experience across functions and a track record of business growth is highly valued. The executive we seek may be one of the following:
· Today may be with an engineering services firm where they were instrumental in managing change and growth.
· With a consulting or financial services company and were involved in critical improvements in efficiency initiatives.
· Has previously serviced as a VP Operations or CAO - and would normally be considered over qualified - but who now seeks an opportunity to grow another business (will be well rewarded for achieving real results).
The person who is most likely to be happy and successful in this role:
· Honest, hardworking, and has a likeable personality.
· Professional with a strong systems background, who is resourceful, can manage multiple functions and multi task.
· MUST be a hands-on manager who will work alone and matrix
manage the technical and administrative staffs.· Well versed in B-to-B professional services, and managing contract modifications and work flow. Has implemented solid internal processes and developed systems to provide financial analysis at the customer, group, and corporate level.
· Has led the initiative in deploying a new software system throughout a division or worked with Human Resources to develop position outlines, compensation plans, training guides, and recruiting plans.
· Has been held accountable to formulate a plan, take action, and deliver to forecast. Can manage multiple office environments, help the team in pre-acquisition due diligence plus maintain a sense of camaraderie and the respect of the troops.
General:
The Chief Administrative Officer/ VP Operations reports directly to the CEO.
Has had a career of increasing responsibilities for multi-faceted direction and planning. Raised on a farm and worked growing up versus the manor born.
PMI - Project Management Institute graduate would be ideal. College degree in engineering, finance, accounting, or IT preferred. MBA would be a bonus. Big consulting or engineering firm background will go a long way, as will additional experience in working for a smaller firm.
This is a relatively small but growing engineering firm yearning for the sophistication of a larger business without the politics that typically accompany larger organizations.
The environment is open and direct, high energy and high expectations. Life balance is a priority in philosophy and action. Balance is as expected as is getting the job done accurately, timely and within the promised cost parameters. Culture is one of success by self-teaching, self-motivation and formal generous reward structure for jobs well done. They seek steady growth without losing sight of who they are.

Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
In days gone by, facial hair said something about a man. It said "I've
got far too much on my mind to worry about the tedious act of shaving
each morning". And, indeed, many of history's great thinkers and
inventors have sported face fungus of one form or other - from
Einstein's moustache to Sir Clive Sinclair's trim beard, the list is
almost endless.
Soon, however, that list will become just a little bit shorter as I
have been cajoled into baring my face to the world for the first time
in 30 years, and it seems only fair to mark the event by raising some
funds for a good cause.
This week sees the annual World's Greatest Shave, which aims to raise
as much money as possible to help the Leukaemia Foundation to continue
to support patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas,
myeloma and related blood disorders. And on Friday 17th March I shall
be doing my bit to help.
The results of the shave will be displayed for all to see on the
Electronicstalk homepage next week, but in the meantime, anyone with a
little spare cash can make a secure donation online via
http://www.worldsgreatestshave.com:80/profile.php?id=317469 - which is
my profile page on the World's Greatest Shave website.
Please give generously.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
thousands more on our website and dozens more are added daily, so do
take a look if you can.

[1] CONVERTOR TAKES TEMPERATURE ONBOARD
(Linear Technology Corp, 12 Mar 2007)
Linear Technology has introduced the LTC2492, a four-channel
delta-sigma analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC) that integrates a
temperature sensor and a novel front-end design in a tiny 4 x 3mm DFN
package. The LTC2492's Easy Drive design results in zero average
differential input current, allowing measurements of high impedance
input sources without the need for an internal buffer. This patented
sampling scheme simplifies the design of front-end signal conditioning
circuits and allows the ADC to be driven directly from bridges, RTDs,
thermocouples and high impedance sensors.

Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Where there's muck there's brass, or so the old Yorkshire saying goes,
and now the United Nations is spearheading a major initiative to
spread the word worldwide.
So while European manufacturers and legislators are still struggling
to come to terms with the full implementation of the EU WEEE
Directive, tomorrow (7th March 2007) sees the launch of the StEP
initiative, aimed at Solving the E-Waste Problem.
The problem is of course well documented. There has been much
publicity in recent years highlighting illegal dumping of e-waste in
the third world - often under the guise of second-hand technology
exports.
In its favour, StEP is not only global in its coverage, it begins with
extensive support from both industry and the public sector, with
high-tech manufacturers joining UN, governmental, NGO and academic
institutions, along with recycling/refurbishing companies as charter
members.
The initiative aims to address the two sides of the e-waste coin: the
recyclables and the disposables. And while there are already many
smaller schemes that aim to extract valuable components from e-waste,
there remains a need to address the disposal of often toxic
non-recyclable waste both safely and economically.
Importantly, the initiative aims to increase extraction and recycling
of many of the rarer elements used in electronics manufacturing in
addition to the obvious gold, silver and palladium. And recent price
rises of elements such as indium, bismuth and ruthenium mean that
recycling is not only desirable, it is an economic necessity.
If it does succeed in creating a globally replicable system for
dealing with e-waste, StEP could prove to be the most important
initiative in the history of our industry.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
thousands more on our website and dozens more are added daily, so do

[1] POWER CHIP SCALES THE PEAKS FOR MEAN DESIGN
(Power Integrations, 06 Mar 2007)
New from Power Integrations, the PeakSwitch PKS607 is an integrated
power conversion IC capable of handling peak demand of up to 127W.
The PKS607 addresses a wide range of applications that exhibit very
high peak-to-RMS (root mean square) power requirements, such as
printers, audio amplifiers, and home entertainment systems. This
PeakSwitch family provides peak power on demand while allowing
designers to specify a transformer sized for the continuous power
level. This capability significantly reduces the size, weight, and
cost of the overall power supply design. PeakSwitch PKS607 handles
almost 50% more peak power than earlier PeakSwitch ICs. The new
device incorporates a 700V MOSFET and low-voltage control circuitry on
a monolithic IC.

[2] NEW EMC DIRECTIVE EXPLAINED
(REO (UK), 01 Mar 2007)
To help engineers get to grips with the new EMC Directive 2004/108/EC
that will replace the existing EMC Directive on 20th July 2007, REO UK
has published a new handbook which is available as a free download or
can be ordered in hard copy. One of the main changes is that the
scope of the directive is more clearly defined and it makes a
distinction between two types of equipment - apparatus (a finished
appliance made commercially available as a single function unit and
intended for the end user) and fixed installations (a combination of
apparatus and other devices which is installed permanently at a
predefined location).

[3] TEST SERVICE CHECKS CHINA ROHS COMPLIANCE
(Soldertec Global, 01 Mar 2007)
>From 1st March 2007, all electronic products exported to China are
required to comply with Chinese RoHS regulations. A new test service
offered by Soldertec Global has been established to help European
exporters comply with this latest legislation. Many products outside
the current scope of the EU WEEE and RoHS Directive fall within the
scope of the China-RoHS legislation. In fact, virtually no exporter
of electronic products to China will remain unaffected.

(Panasonic Electric Works UK, 05 Mar 2007)
The CJ relay from Panasonic is a subminiature twin relay aimed at
automotive applications such as central door locking, electric seats,
sun roofs and windows. The reliability and low cost are only matched
by the relay's small size. The smallest in its class, it is extremely
compact taking up approximately two thirds of the company's previous
twin type CT relay. The case accommodates dual coils with independent
contact arrangements, and with dimensions of only 13.7 x 12.2 x
13.5mm, the relay is no larger than conventional single relays.

[3] Accelerometer offers long-term stability
Inertial Aerosystems has released a force rebalance
accelerometer, designed for industrial applications. The
QA-650 incorporates the established Q-Flex etched quartz
proof flexure seismic system. An amorphous quartz proof mass
structure provides excellent bias, scale factor and axis
alignment. Integral electronics develop an acceleration
proportional output with current providing both static and
dynamic acceleration measurements up to 30g. With an
appropriately scaled output resistor, the output current can
be converted into a voltage. This product has long-term
stability, low noise and excellent long-term bias
repeatability.

[6] James Walker helps industry with IPPC
A 24-page booklet from James Walker is helping businesses to
meet aspects of European Union's Integrated Pollution
Prevention and Control (IPPC) directive. Large fines or
imprisonment can await executives of EU-based companies that
fail to comply with its conditions when they are implemented
for existing industrial plants in October 2007. Although not
a substitute for obtaining specific legal advice, the guide
presents an invaluable and thought-provoking overview of
directive 96/61/EC.
